TITLE:  Winter Supervisor (2018 Winter)

SEASON:  Austral Winter

LOCATION:  McMurdo Station, Antarctica

SECTOR/DEPT:  GSC Antarctica

Currently seeking a Winter Supervisor to oversee Postal, Janitorial, Beverage, Recreation, Retail and Rooms Coordination in conjunction with Management in the Continental United States (CONUS). Position will report to both Lodging Manager and Station Services Assistant. Duties will include the following and other duties as assigned and required.

Postal duties: Operates the McMurdo Station Post office, oversees movement, sorting and distribution of mail. Assists in ordering and control of postal supplies. Performs all COPE procedures as needed.

Rooms Coordination duties: Coordinates with CONUS management on room assignments at McMurdo Station, including tracking movements in and out of the station, updating the community phone list, and providing customer service to the McMurdo community.

Janitorial duties: Responsible for supervising janitorial staff by ensuring that the janitorial team conducts their duties safely, efficiently and with a positive attitude. Performs laundry tasking as part of overall job requirements.

Beverage duties: Monitors and assists with beverage operations, to include working with part time Beverage point of contact on scheduling, ordering, and safety/training meetings. Ensures inventory management controls are adhered to and coordinates with CONUS management on necessary reporting.

Recreation duties: Monitors and assists recreational activities.

Retail duties: Assists with Retail operations as needed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Attends weekly station leadership meetings as able, communicates with Conus management on relevant topics.

Controls, secures, and sells meter postage necessary for McMurdo Station post office. Keeps stamp inventory.

Supervises the sorting, receipt and distribution of mail at McMurdo Station.

Manifests and prepares for shipment of all outgoing northbound and southbound mail.

Responsible for submitting US postal claims for South Pole and McMurdo Stations.

Completes all PS3849s and PS3883s for accountable mail.

Provides guidance to customers regarding proper mail preparation and acceptance.

Coordinates with the Christchurch APO for the movement of parcel and letter mail.

Works with the Lodging Manager to plan for all incoming resident placement and outgoing resident room inspections.

Manages linen and room inspections as needed

Coordinates with the Chalet Admin to provide updates to the online community phone list as needed.

Prepares key packets and presents arrival briefs for residents on incoming flights.

Provides customer service to community for lodging issues.

Handles on-call lock out duties and late night calls as needed.

Conducts monthly beverage safety meetings and provide supervisor with a copy of such meetings.

Monitors safety awareness and safety record.

Requisition and inspect supplies and equipment to maintain stock levels and ensure standards of quality are met in the bars/clubs.

Recruiting and training of GSC Part Time, On Call Bartenders in methods and procedures.

Communicate regularly and efficiently with Part Time, On Call Bartenders.

Oversee operations at the bars including employee schedules, event planning, and staff functions and responsibilities.

Establish a physical presence at the bar and make adjustments, coach and develop to ensure customer service is consistently high.

Provide shift support at the Retail Store when necessary including retail stock, store cleanliness and customer service.

Assigned tasks completed thoroughly and in a timely manner.

Sets pre-season expectations and completes post-season evaluations of Lead Janitors and Janitors, or as required by the Lodging Manager

Assists with applicable janitorial duties of as required.

Tracks physical condition (injuries, aches, pains, sick days) of non-culinary staff, adjusting tasking for light duty and other special requirements as needed, completes all required reports and communicates all injuries and relevant information to CONUS Management

Laundry is a key responsibility of this position.

Reports weekly to the Lodging Manager on janitorial tasks accomplished.

Places and tracks work orders with facilities maintenance.

Recruits, evaluates and hires contract part time "on ice" recreation POC staff from interested applicants.

Establishes the expectations set for all recreation POC and part time staff.

Manages recreation POC staff personnel to ensure proper standards of operation are being followed.

Resources, markets, and recruits volunteers when required.

Communicates with McMurdo personnel to develop and improve the Recreation department programs and services to the community.

Ensures compliance with Safety, Environment, Health, and Waste Management policies and procedures.

Completes required Human Resources Supervisory Training.

Handles confidential matters (personnel actions, management reports, etc.) in accordance with management policy.

Interacts with the National Science Foundation, armed forces, and other agency officials, both over the telephone and in person, in a professional and tactful manner.

Responsible for implementing and maintaining a safe workplace program and ensuring that safety is the highest priority on the jobsite.

Ongoing work center cleaning and recycling tasks.

Must be detailed-oriented with strong organizational skills.

Must be able to lift 50 pounds.

Provides direct support, using staff resources if necessary, to the achievement of all metrics related to ASC.

Complies with all ASC Environmental Health & Safety, and Quality Assurance, requirements and goals. Provides documentation to these divisions as necessary to ensure adequate and legal documentation. Promote and practice relevant health and safety and fire safety standards

Works to achieve ASC goals and contractual commitments

May be required to perform duties requiring repetitive motion.

Sets the example for the staff with regard to punctuality, attendance, attitude and hygiene.

EDUCATION: BA/BS in Business Administration/Management or other relevant degree required. Relevant experience accepted in lieu of a degree.

CERTIFICATIONS AND/OR LICENSING REQUIREMENTS:  Required Postal certification must be obtained prior to starting position, current ServSafe Food Handler certificate required, Training for Intervention Procedures (T.I.P.S) certified.

EXPERIENCE: A minimum of four years' supervisory/management experience required. A variety of previous experience in military postal APO operations, restaurant, bar, retail, recreation and janitorial experience preferred. Must have the ability to stay calm in stressful environments & situations. Must be able to prioritize tasking on an ongoing basis. Must possess strong Microsoft office and database skills. Strong organizational ability required. Experience with scheduling preferred. Previous Antarctic experience preferred. Customer Service focus is a must.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS: Must be able to complete annual APO training.

OTHER:  US citizenship or permanent residency required.
